PEOPLE + SYSTEMS

WHAT

A service that encourages people to donate or buy electronic components sustainably, whilst teaching people with no experience to create their own projects.

WHY

Through this service, users can reuse salvaged components which most companies don't recycle affordably. Whilst also, encouraging more people to dabble in electronics without the barrier of a big investment for tooling.

THE SPARK

How can we increase the “earth’s time” through electronics?

With the abundance of e-waste, most of the components in broken electronics are still usable. There are a few common parts in electronics that can be repurposed to create many different things.

What if we can reuse the components we find in broken electronics to create new ones?

INITIAL RESEARCH

What did I do?
An online survey about attitudes and behaviour about electronics.

With who?
80 respondents in the UK and Indonesia ages 18-53.

Most people are obsessed or dependent on their electronics.

People desire electronics that allow them to detach, reduce dependency, understand, connect with the real world, and care for each other.

50% of people are interested, but not very knowledgable about electronics.

Motivation depends on understanding, customisation, time, affordability, usefulness, enjoyment, sustainability, social aspect, and reward.

73% of people don’t recycle their electronics due to various reasons.

People recycle to protect the environment, reduce waste, or for simplicity.

Reasons for not recycling include uncertainty about where to recycle, sentimental attachment to items, passing items down to someone else, security concerns, or the desire for an upgrade.
