SILA

WHAT

Sila manifests the re-examining of various sitting positions. It allows users to sit comfortably in various ways while maintaining the principle idea of a chair (to sit), elevating the user no matter how they sit.

WHY

Throughout history, it has been said that sitting on the floor is better than sitting on a chair, but somehow chairs are everywhere. Sila examines the design of chairs and how they are used, challenging the "proper" sitting position to uncover the colonial ideals placed on even the most simple objects.

Why do we sit the way we sit?
  • Chairs have only been apart of our lives in the last two centuries due to the shift to a more inactive lifestyle
  • The Greeks started the notion that sitting on the ground meant losing face while philosophers walked around
  • In the 1880s chairs were first mass produced in Germany

Fast forward to 2023, it is weird to imagine a world without chairs.

When in reality sitting the way we do is not good for us. We don’t need the perfect support we need the possibility of movement.

But, this isn’t a call to get rid of chairs, but instead a call for a more flexible chair typology...

How might chairs for flexible seating look like?
